Is american driving licence valid in bali ?.
If not what would be alternative for short trip.

No, but you should get yourself an International drivers license.

Beware we drive on the other side of the road, and hiring a car with driver is quite affordable....

I think you might want to rethink that! I've been to Bali many times and will be moving there permanently soon. And there is no way I'd be trying to drive myself around. Hire a driver, either by the day or for your entire stay, especially if you are staying and planning to drive in the southern areas of Bali. The quieter countryside might be somewhat easier to navigate.
I am saying this because a friend of mine came over during my last visit, thinking he would drive himself around. Needless to say, within 2 days he decided to hire a driver - and that was after driving only in the Ubud and north area, never mind Kuta, Sanur and Denpasar.
